SOJOURNER TRUTH - New York City The Sojourner Truth was our second opportunity to rehabilitatean entire New York City block face.
Uniquely it was our first opportunity to where every building (8) was identica lwith thesame floor heights. This was a mixed use rehabilitation with commercial stores occupying the entire first floor. The buildings were entered from the street ends of the block and the other avenue entrances were closed. The elimination of the avenue entrances resulted in larger commercial spaces. We created lobby and egress spaces on the end of each block and created two (2) buildings out of the original eight (8) buildings while adding two (2) high speed elevators. That arrangement resulted in 134 new Moderate Income dwelling units in an area called Manhattan Valley where the shortage of affordable housing is acute. The building received new life support systems, exterior finishes, interior finishes and Steamcleaning. The Developer was Chaim Wachsman with the Section 8 assistance of HUD.
